October 2011 - What it Means to Care First

Technician Spotlight
Our team members at each of our four locations are amazing. Not only do they put in long hours at a physically and emotionally stressful job, but they do it with a smile on their face and love of their work. In their spare time, many of our staff participate in various community service activities, with rescue organizations, or find other ways to volunteer. This quarter we’re highlighting Catherine Tipton. Catherine has found a way to continue a childhood passion and be a positive influence on other kids. She started in the 4H program when she was 8 years old and aged out when she turned 19, stating her volunteer leaders helped teach her a tremendous amount about life, about herself, and of course, school subjects! About 7 years ago she became a volunteer leader in the organization in order to help others like she had been. She says the 4H program is wonderful because it teaches kids "how to communicate, keeps them out of trouble, and plan and simple be a kid"! 4H helps prepare these students for careers in animal medicine and also with entering veterinary school. Catherine was awarded the Volunteer of the Year award recently, a major honor in the 4H organization. This award is given based on the number of hours a volunteer has worked, the community service projects, fundraisers, and other help given, and in her case, participating with the horse bowl teams. In horse bowl, the 4H’ers compete against others on county and state levels, answering questions about horse related subjects.

All Dressed Up
The Wake County SPCA’s Fur Ball is the talk to the town in October, reminiscent of high school prom, with the added bonus of numerous wonderful items up for auction to raise funds for this No-Kill, local rescue organization. The 2010 Fur Ball raised more than $250,000 for the animals of the SPCA-money that is spent on needy animals in our area.
This year, the 16th annual Fur Ball was on October 2nd, from 6:00 pm until 10:30 pm at The State Club, Park Alumni Center.

CareFirst Animal Hospital has been honored to be a sponsor of the Fur Ball since it started and we would love it if you could help too. For more information please visit the Wake County SPCA’s Fur Ball page.

Santa Paws is coming to town!
The SPCA Santa Paws holiday photo promotion will return to CareFirst Animal Hospital for the fifth year in a row during the first week of December at the Oberlin and Falls Pointe locations. Photos will be taken on one evening at each the two locations, with Dr. Joe Gordon and Dr. Jared Conley sitting in for Santa. Hospital team members enjoy dressing as Santa’s Helpers and encouraging pets to sit comfortably with Santa. The high quality, digital images, perfect for holiday cards or framing, are then dropped off at your hospital a week later for you to pick up. Prices range from $25 - $45, depending on the number of faces in the photo. Exact dates and times will be announced in early November, so check our website for more information!
