Digital Radiology and Ultrasound Advancements in Pet Health

CareFirst Animal Hospital has a technologically advanced X-ray machine that creates excellent quality radiographs that can diagnose specific medical and surgical conditions in your pet.

What is digital radiology?

Instead of using film, cassettes and intrusive developing chemicals, our animal hospitals all use a digitized system that is more precise, more easily archived and recalled, and it produces faster results in a shorter amount of time that old-fashioned x-ray machines that depended on film.

Pets can be anesthetized to better handle the procedure, or your pet can be given a local injection and remain awake. We will discuss both options and which is the best choice for your pet.

We use our digital radiology equipment for dental x-rays, hip dysplasia, diagnosing bone problems, lung problems, and a myriad of other conditions. When using the digital platform for dental procedures, we’re able to see below the gum’s surface to determine if there’s an abscess, or if the teeth are pulling away from the gums.

An ultrasound Isn’t Just for Seeing a Newborn Baby Anymore

An ultrasound is a procedure that’s performed outside the body that produces a visual image of what’s going on inside the body, An ultrasound consists of a fist-sized paddle that looks similar to a computer mouse. A gel is gently rubbed onto the surface of the paddle and then it’s placed on a shaved area of your pet’s body that the vet wants to get a better look at.

How Does an Ultrasound Work?

Since the paddle is connected to a computer, when the small paddle is gently guided over the pet’s skin, a series of images are produced on the computer. Those images can play like a short video, and they can also be stopped and started to deliver individual images. After the procedure, your veterinarian and study the pictures and then show them to you as part of your discussion. The vet can also enlarge each of the ultrasound pictures for better and clearer focus on the organ and internal body structure that he’s scanning.

Our veterinarians have been trained professionally to use various ultrasound techniques. Then they’ve been educated to relay the information to you in such a way that you both can see what’s going on inside your pet.

Advancements in imagery such as digital radiology and progressive ultrasound aid our veterinary staff in providing the best patient care. Combining advanced technology with old-fashioned passion for veterinary care creates powerful medicine for our patients.
