Which Types Of Dogs Need To Be Groomed?

Tangles, knots, dreads, and mats. If you have a dog with long, thick hair, these are words you’re all too familiar with. When it comes to dog fur, every breed is different. Some breeds need to be brushed multiple times a week, but others may only need a light brushing every now and then. When it comes down to it, some dogs just require more grooming than others. So, which types of dogs need to be groomed?

What is Dog Grooming?

Dog grooming is an overarching term for the practice of regular maintenance and hygiene. Depending on the goals you have for your pup, grooming can mean brushing every other week or brushing every other day. It’s a common misconception that grooming is simply fur care, but it goes well beyond that. Grooming can include ear cleaning, nail trimmings, teeth cleaning, anal gland expression, and more. Although, if you’re considering a service like teeth and ear cleanings, you should make an appointment with a veterinarian. Services like teeth cleaning require a veterinarian to ensure proper cleaning and mouth health. Also, groomers are not able to perform tartar removal like a veterinarian.

Which Types of Dogs Need to be Groomed?

Certain breeds need to be groomed more than others, so let’s talk about the top five breeds that need to be groomed.

Old English Sheepdog

The old English sheepdog emerged in England long ago and is the product of some of the first herding dog breeds recorded. This breed made the top of this list for good reason. The fluffy, thick-furred pup is notorious for its tendency to matt, tangle, and form dreads. To prevent this from happening, the sheepdog needs to be brushed frequently to prevent a dirty or matted coat. Also, sheepdogs have an undercoat, so they will shed it once a year.

Poodle

The poodle is a smart, athletic breed that you can see as far back as the early 15th and 16th centuries in Germany. These dogs were originally bred to work as water retrievers to be used for hunting. There are three sizes of poodles, the standard, miniature, and toy. This breed is known for its thick, curly, and soft coat. So, it makes sense that they made our list for dogs that need to be groomed.

Poodles require regular trims and haircuts to prevent heavy mats and dreads from forming. Also, their thick fur can block their line of sight as it gets longer and longer. Depending on the rate of growth, you may want to have your poodle’s fur trimmed every 4 to 12 weeks.

Hungarian Puli

Originally bred for herding in Hungary, the puli, like poodles, make for intelligent and playful companions. Along with this intelligence and companionship come thick, corded dreadlocks. Like the poodle, regular care and maintenance need to be done to prevent excessive matting or dirty fur. Unlike the poodle, the puli’s dreads will move out of their view as they move, so you don’t need to worry about their sight.

Afghan Hound

The Afghan hound was originally bred in the hills and mountains of Afghanistan, so it makes sense that they are equipped with thick, flowing fur. This silly, loyal hound breed made the list because of their silky, thick, and fine fur that requires at least two brushings every week. The most important thing when it comes to grooming Afghan hounds is brushing. Regular brushing and grooming prevents unwanted tangles, dreads, and knots.

Bichon Frise

This small, fluffy, soft breed was developed by the French as a loyal companion and is derived from Spanish sailing and hunting breeds. Just like poodles, the bichon frise is hypoallergenic and requires regular trimming and brushing to prevent mats, tangles, and eyesight blocking.
