Help Your Local Rescue Organizations in Five Easy Steps!

Have you ever wondered how you can help local rescue organizations or your county shelter? In the Raleigh/Durham area there are numerous rescue organizations that are always in need. Here are a few ways you can help!

1. Volunteer

Research the rescue organizations you would like to volunteer with and then contact them to see what kinds of volunteers they need. Sometimes they need someone to come clean litterboxes and feed pets, sometimes they need fosters (a person who takes in a pet on a short-term basis until it can be adopted), and sometimes they need people to help at events.  Be willing to try something new! Bonus points:  Experienced professionals, such as photographers, electricians, plumbers, or carpenters are always in need. Contact these groups to see if they want to keep your information for future needs, and they may even help promote you!

2. Donate

Every single penny helps. Any time you have the chance, donate to your favorite rescue organizations. That money goes a long way towards sheltering, feeding, cleaning, and getting medical help for these pets.

3. Make Something

Are you a crafty person? Many groups need toys for their pets as well as blankets, beds, or interesting ways to display photos to catch a potential adopter’s eye. Some groups host yard sales or sell items at events; find out if they could use some of your craft items to raise money.  Enrichment and mental stimulation with appropriate toys will help many rescue pets feel more comfortable and come out of their shell, making them more adoptable.

4. Tell The World

Spread the word about your favorite rescue organization! Ask if they have flyers or brochures that could be hung up or distributed. Talk about them on your Facebook page or other social media. Purchase a t- shirt from them and wear it everywhere. Getting their name out will help tremendously!

5. Throw A Party!

This is a win-win way to raise funds for your favorite rescue – throw a party! Any sort of social event will do, and make sure you tell your friends that you’re doing this to support the rescue organization or shelter. Think of creative ways to raise money at your party with games, stories about pets in the organization, and a variety of donation jars.

These are just a few of the many ways you can help the homeless pets in your area! Do you have other ideas? Share them with us on our Facebook page!
